What to do if the cat is poisoned: instructions

Cats are very finicky creatures, but also curious.

If the cat eats something that is not suitable for his furry body, there is a high probability of poisoning. It is better to know in advance how to help your pet with this ailment.

How can a cat be poisoned?

Curiosity is usually to blame for cat poisoning. Cats wonder what the trash smells like, what the soap tastes like and what the owners eat for dinner.

Some plants are poisonous to cats

Poisoning is usually divided into types:

  • Food - the cat was poisoned by spoiled or prohibited products;
  • Medicinal - from exceeding the dosage or unsuitable medication;
  • Vegetable - when eating poisonous flowers;
  • Household - if the cat is full of household chemicals.

Often cats get poisoned because of easy access to the poison: for example, if the detergent is open. Cats that walk on their own are the most at risk - it is not always clear what the gulena ate.

Symptoms of cat poisoning

Signs of feline intoxication depend on the type of poisoning. In one case, the disease goes away almost imperceptibly, in the other - with severe and frightening symptoms.

The cat is ill due to poisoning

In general, poisoning is characterized by:

  • Refusal to eat and lack of appetite;
  • Increased thirst;
  • Diarrhea and vomiting;
  • Changes in body temperature;
  • Lethargy, weakness, and discouragement;
  • Trembling, chills;
  • Increased salivation;
  • Sometimes - tachycardia, convulsions.

These symptoms do not necessarily all appear at once. An attentive owner will notice the intoxication of the pet even with a slight malaise.

First aid

It is necessary to identify what the cat was poisoned with: further actions depend on this. Pets often leave traces of their crime: gnawed flowers, torn packaging of pills, overturned trash can.

The cat is poisoned and clears the stomach

Determine if the cat is dirty with toxins. If traces of poison are  on the fur, wash your pet thoroughly.

Analyze the condition of the pet: if it seems difficult to you, it is better not to hesitate and go to the veterinarian. The cat can die from poisoning, so don't be shy.

Convulsions, loss of consciousness and impaired coordination of movements indicate severe intoxication - in this case, there should be no talk of home treatment.

If the cat has swallowed the poison, but the condition is not serious, it is necessary to induce vomiting. Be careful not to induce vomiting with acid poisoning to avoid burns to the esophagus.

In case of food or drug poisoning, the cat is given activated charcoal in powder or salt is placed on the root of the tongue. A weak solution of potassium permanganate and enterosgel helps with plant poison. In case of household poisoning, you need to give the cat a mixture of lemon juice and boiled water.

In case of poisoning, the cat needs to stimulate vomiting.

After stimulating vomiting, do not feed the cat until he feels better. Solder the animal with oatmeal or rice water.

How to avoid cat poisoning

Cats behave like foolish children who are interested in trying everything. You should protect your pet even from attempts to poison itself.

Do not keep plants poisonous for cats at home: ficuses, lilies, Kalanchoe, azalea and others. If you don't want to throw away your favorite flowers, you need to put them in a place inaccessible to animals.

Hide the trash can away and put the detergents in the cupboard. Some cats know how to open cabinet doors, so consider a chemistry lock. The same applies to the home medicine cabinet.

Cats shouldn't eat table food

Do not leave food on the table: the cat will want to climb in and find out what the owners are eating. And don't even think about giving the cat forbidden food!

In the country and outside, you should also protect the cat from eating poisonous plants. Often times, cats accidentally eat rat poison - especially if it is applied to a piece of meat. Hunter pets can be poisoned by a mouse that ate rat poison.

Be careful and monitor the pet's diet: it is better to throw away food once again than to treat the poisoning.

May your pets be healthy and don't eat nonsense!
