How to bathe a kitten for the first time

Perhaps you are already an experienced cat lover and the problem of how to wash a kitten for the first time does not raise any questions. Or maybe a tiny furry (or not very hairy) creature is in your home for the first time, so it can be helpful to learn how to properly bathe a kitten and when to start bathing.

INTERESTING! Although the title of cleanest animal is not given to cats, but to pigs, cats can spend a third of their time outside sleeping licking themselves, and then they can move on to other householders, including their owners. So, mustache cleaners “wash” about 10 times a day!

Due to the fact that cats are almost constantly cleaning themselves of all pollution, many “cat experts” tend to believe that bathing these animals in water is simply not worth it. Perhaps because of the lack of need for water treatment, cats are afraid of water.

How often can you wash?

Under natural conditions, the ancestors of modern cats did not actually need to bathe, and now no one bathes cats living outdoors. However, sometimes it is still necessary to make up for the striped whiskers: if they return from a long “spree” and live at the same time constantly at home, if the animal has fleas, some serious pollution has occurred, if you just picking kittens or adult animals on the way.

INTERESTING! Cats don't like getting wet because natural fat is washed off the skin's surface – the body's natural defense.

There are several recommendations on how to properly bathe a cat:

  • it is necessary to bathe kittens and adult cats in a warm room;
  • Like humans, cats prefer to bathe on an empty stomach;
  • it is recommended to wash the kitten in the bath, from where it is difficult to get out;
  • the owner's movements must be calm and reliable;
  • it is necessary to say affectionate words to a kitten or cat to soothe him with intonation;
  • the animal should be gradually immersed in water, holding the joints of the forelegs;
  • if the cat resists, grab it by the scruff of the neck so it doesn't stick or scratch and take it to the water;
  • so that the paws do not slip, you can put a rag or rubber mat on the bottom;
  • water temperature should be within 35-40°;
  • it is better to set the water level no higher than the stomach;
  • use a special shampoo for bathing the cat;
  • it is worth using detergents very carefully, lathering, avoiding contact with eyes;
  • it is necessary to rinse the foam thoroughly, as the residue can irritate the skin for a long time and prevent the appearance of a layer of grease;
  • it is most convenient to wash off the foam with the help of a shower;
  • bath time should be short – no more than 5-7 minutes;
  • after rinsing, the wool must be carefully wrung out;
  • wrap in a warm dry towel and dry with light movements;
  • locate the vagina near a heater or battery and allow the animal to lick its fur and dry it on its own.

URGENT!!! Do not wet your cat's head (eyes, ears and nose should be dry) and avoid hypothermia during and after bathing.

Specific advice on how to train a cat to bathe or how to train a cat to bathe is almost impossible to find, and often this isn't necessary. The basic rule of training is not to scare the animal or hurt it in the bath for the first time.

At what age can you take a shower?

Many people are interested in the question of whether it is possible to bathe a kitten. If the kitten is a month old or less, then washing it is simply not worth it: there is a danger of disturbing the temperature regime and removing a thin layer of fat from its skin, eliminating its defense mechanisms against bacteria. When can I bathe my kitten? If the kitten is older, then, if possible, it is better to postpone this procedure until the baby gets used to the owner, begins to trust people, becomes stronger and learns to lick. It is also important how afraid the kitten is of water.

How often should you bathe your kitten?

Kittens really can get dirty more often than adult cats and cats, and they're just learning to take care of themselves, or because of their youthful activity, they do it quickly and carelessly. In order not to get dirty often stressful – clean individual places with a damp, damp, odorless cloth or wash locally under running water.

When circumstances arise when you need to take a shower:

  • it is necessary to acquaint the kitten with water and the bathroom in advance (try to put it in a dry bath and play with it, tame it, take it to the water);
  • prepare something tasty as a gift after swimming;
  • be gentle, use a calm intonation in your voice and keep noise out (including from the water);
  • do not use bath products or choose the mildest, odorless soap solution.

This rule is also suitable if you need to decide how to train your kitten to swim.

Teaching your cat to water

When you become the owner of a one month old kitten and it is very dirty, instead of washing it with water, wipe it with a soft damp cloth and wipe it with a dry towel.

URGENT! After vaccination, you can bathe the kitten no earlier than 2 weeks later.

What shampoo to use for cats and kittens?

There are several modern remedies for cat "bath days":

  • Liquid product. They are suitable for all ages of cats. They can wash the kittens. Very little shampoo is needed to remove dirt and soft hair. If you overdo it with the amount, then the foam will be washed off for a long time and hard.
  • Dry shampoo. This is an outlet for cats who are already afraid of bathing. The product can be applied without water to the coat and combed along with the dirt. Frequent use possible. Dry shampoo does not irritate the skin and does not touch the fat layer.
  • Spray shampoo. Apply to wet coat. After massage, it is brushed. Due to the nature of the spray, it can cause sneezing and irritate mucous areas, therefore not suitable for very sensitive cats and kittens.

Be sure to follow the rules for bathing kittens and adult cats. Always remember that water is not a very desirable environment for your pet, so be patient and respect its nature!
