Cats vomit with white foam, what are the causes and how to avoid it

People are used to seeing vomiting and nausea as signs of a malfunctioning digestive system. However, in cats, everything happens a little differently, and in some cases it is even considered a normal physiological process. Due to their natural hygiene, cute pussies are constantly licking their fur coats, while swallowing some of their wool.

This is one of the reasons for the gag reflex, which should not cause undue concern. But there are other situations where vomiting can be a symptom of a dangerous disease. We will consider these and other reasons in our article.

Why do cats vomit with white foam?

Vomiting in animals is a kind of protective reaction against the entry of chemical irritants, foreign bodies and pathogenic bacteria into the body. Vomiting in a cat with white foam may indicate a malfunction in the biliary system. During the digestion of food in the stomach and its entry into the intestines, the secretion of mucus does not stop, the excess of which, upon contact with air, turns into white bubbles. If in this case the foam has a homogeneous consistency and there is nothing in it, there is no danger to the cat's organism.

Causes of vomiting in kittens

Kittens vomit with white foam in the following cases:

  1. A sharp transition from one diet to another (for example, the baby has just been weaned from his mother and begins to feed himself a full-fledged “adult” diet, and his stomach has not yet learned to digest natural foods or foods).
  2. Poor quality and unhealthy food (fatty, fried, salty, smoked, stale food and poor quality cheap food cause negative reactions and rejections in kittens).
  3. Overeating and too large pieces of food.
  4. Swallow a large amount of wool in the stomach (with frequent and active licking).
  5. Accidental ingestion of foreign objects (candy wrappers, toy parts, Christmas tree decorations, and other non-edible items).
  6. Poisoning with chemicals (drugs, dishwashing liquid, cosmetics, toilet fillers, alcohol).
  7. Possible consequences of vaccination.
  8. Liver problems, pancreatitis or triaditis, any infectious disease.

If the baby is vomiting, you need to try to find out the exact cause and show the animal to the doctor.

Vomiting on a cat

An adult cat vomits for the same reasons as a small kitten. If this happens infrequently, you need not worry, but if the animal has been vomiting for a long time and the condition is intermittent, you should contact your veterinarian immediately. The doctor will conduct an examination and establish the correct diagnosis. The inspection consists of the following stages:

  • Determination of the frequency and duration of vomiting;
  • clarification of information on nutrition and the possibility of ingestion of harmful objects and substances;
  • analyze the type and consistency of vomiting, clarify when the cat vomited for the first time
  • analysis of the general condition of the cat, appetite;
  • questions to the owner about chronic diseases or other infections that the owner is already aware of.

If your animal has only vomited once, is not vomiting much, is white or slightly yellowish in color, and has hairballs in it, observe your animal during the day. Usually, this discomfort will go away on its own. The situation becomes serious if the cat is sick and vomits for more than a day. In this case, the body dehydrates quickly, which can lead to more serious consequences. If at the same time the cat looks sickly, lethargic, does not go to the toilet and does not allow touching the stomach, a visit to the vet cannot be postponed.

A cat that has not eaten for more than two days and vomits occasionally can become seriously ill. In such cases, you must pass general blood, urine, x-ray and ultrasound tests of the kidneys and abdominal cavity. Such prolonged vomiting is not physiological in nature and may be a sign of severe food poisoning, plague infection, exacerbation of one of the chronic diseases or panleukopenia.

Urgent! If hair regurgitation occurs regularly, this indicates a malfunction of the digestive system. This pathology is a consequence of problems with the biliary tract, inflammatory processes of the rectum and pancreatitis.

Type of vomit

In most cases, you can determine the cause of vomiting by the consistency and type of vomiting.

  1. If the animal vomits yellow foam, this means that some bile entered the cat's stomach during the digestion of food. This often occurs with gastritis, colitis, problems with the bile ducts. Against the background of bile secretion, the liver is cleansed of harmful microorganisms and toxic substances. Thus, cats can also vomit with calcivirosis, feline distemper, food changes and swallowing small foreign objects in the stomach.
  2. An animal vomits with clear liquid or saliva in case of an  outbreak  of a rather dangerous disease . At the same time, cats can also vomit with yellow liquid or foam, which does not contain undigested food and hairballs. With each subsequent push, the cat gets worse, becomes lethargic and apathetic, hiding in a dark place. When a seal vomits a clear, almost colorless liquid, its body loses water, leading to rapid dehydration.
  3. It happens that cats can vomit immediately after eating. The reason for this is intestinal parasites, which are found even in domestic cats. In addition, cats may regurgitate undigested food that is not absorbed by their body. This condition can manifest itself with intestinal obstruction, gastritis, colitis, hepatitis, or pancreatitis. An animal may vomit up food that has just been eaten due to the amount of wool that has accumulated in its stomach or to overeat.
  4. If worms live in the cat's body, the cat may vomit with the worms. In such situations, you should take precautions, limit your pet's contact with people and make visits to the vet. Taking antiparasitic drugs can be started only after passing a stool analysis, which determines the type of worms that live in the animal's body. During the treatment of cats for intestinal worms, clean and fresh water should always be in the drinker.

What to do if the cat vomits?

If the gag reflex occurs once, the vomiting resolves quickly, and symptoms such as temperature fluctuations, diarrhea, weakness and lethargy are absent, try to ease your cat's suffering yourself. In case of poisoning, the animal must stop feeding, it is better to provide him with a regular drinking regime. You can water the cat with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, which has a bactericidal effect. The maximum "duration" of fasting should not exceed 12 hours. About every two hours, you need to water the fur with water or a weak solution of Smecta.

After improving the general condition, you can gradually return to the previous diet. You can give boiled chicken in small portions, rice water, liquid chicken stock, or special medicinal feed. After two or three days, you can switch your pet from a frugal diet to a regular diet.

When do we run to the doctor?

This should be done in most situations. If:

  •  The animal vomits with foam or liquid for 3-4 hours;
  • vomit is white or yellow, blood spots are visible in it;
  • potential hairy patient vomits for a long time, refuses to eat and drink.
  • In addition to the main disturbance, the cat or cat has diarrhea , the nose becomes dry and hot, weakness appears, the temperature rises and convulsions begin.

In such cases, you should not act alone, you need to contact the veterinary clinic as soon as possible, where the hairy poor:

  • Diagnose;
  • prescribe antiemetic drugs;
  • administer anesthesia to help relieve spasms;
  • prescribe the necessary gastroprotectors for the gastric mucosa;
  • prevent dehydration and make up for the lack of fluids with special solutions;
  • if necessary, prescribe antibiotics and anthelmintic drugs .

The above complex of actions will help to minimize the negative consequences of vomiting and prevent its occurrence in the future.

To prevent a more serious disease, the symptom of which is vomiting, you need to monitor your pet's diet, carry out all the necessary vaccinations and carry out regular prophylaxis against fleas, ticks and worms. All of these actions will help keep your kitten or cat healthy.
